EPA Bans R-22

EPA Bans Ozone-Depleting Refrigerants

The use of the chemical refrigerant R-22 is being phased out by the EPA under the Montreal Protocol. The U.S. must achieve a certain percentage of progress towards the total phase out of production and consumption of HCFCs. By January 1, 2015 the U.S. needs to reduce consumption by 90%.

How may this effect you?

Due to the phase out of the production of the chemical R-22 it will become more expensive for consumers to service their A/C units. A refrigerant leak could result in cost of $800 or more because of the phase out and inflated expense of R-22. Highly energy-efficient air conditioners with EPA’s Energy Star® label can save you 10% to 40% on heating and cooling bills yearly.
